DGCII seizes silicone sealant consignment on charges of misdeclaration

KARACHI (June 18 2008): The Directorate General of CustomsIntelligence and Investigation (DGCII)-FBR, Karachi, has seizedconsignment of 'Silicone Sealant' worth Rs one million importedfrom China, on the charge of misdeclaration in import documents.
A credible information was received by Fazal Qadir Qalbani,Director, DGCII, that some importers are importing Silicone Sealant(HS Code 3214-9010) evading custom duty, sales tax and income taxby misdeclaring in the documents, providing huge loss to publicexchequer.
Reacting on it, concerned officials at DGCII intercepted theconsignment weighed 14625 kgs at West Wharf, Karachi. In order tocheck the veracity of the information, representative samples weredrawn and forwarded to the Customs laboratory, as well as PCSIR labto ascertain the actual description and custom classification ofthe imported goods.
Test reports of both labs confirmed that the representative sampleswere found to be Silicone Sealant, as against the declaration.After receipt of lab test reports, the consignment has been seizedunder the provisions of the Customs Act, 1969. The loss to nationalexchequer in shape of evasion of duty and taxes was Rs 1.2 million.
It has been mentioned that such consignments had previously beencleared by customs and deprived the national exchequer of dueamount of duty and taxes. Investigation into the matter is inprogress.-PR
