DTI warns on price increase of school supplies

[2008-5-19]

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) continues to monitor the prices of basic commodities in Zamboanga City even as it warns of a possible increase in the prices of school supplies.

DTI Provincial Director Rolando Acuña said an increase in the prices of construction materials, flour and detergent soap have been observed by the Department.

Acuña said the increase in the price of construction materials is due to the shortage of supply in the world market.

He said that due to the economic recession in the United States, the price of wheat, which is a basic component of flour, also went up.

According to Acuña, the price of school supplies has not yet increased based on the trade department's last monitoring, and that storeowners should not take the opportunity to increase their prices.

However, Acuña pointed out that storeowners could increase the prices of school supplies so long as they can justify the increase.
