FDA warns against boguss cancer cures

Twenty-three U.S. companies and two foreign ones are marketing awide range of products fraudulently claiming to prevent and curecancer. The FDA also warns North American consumers against usingor purchasing the products, which include tablets, teas, tonics,black salves, and creams, and are sold under various names on theInternet. The products contain ingredients such as bloodroot, sharkcartilage, coral calcium, cesium, ellagic acid, Cat's Claw, anherbal tea called Essiac, and mushroom varieties such as AgaricusBlazeii, Shitake, Maitake, and Reishi. Because these products claimto cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease, and these productshave not been shown to be safe and effective for their labeledconditions of use, they are unapproved new drugs marketed inviolation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Salmolux Inc. of Federal Way, WA, is recalling lot # 01418 of itsWild Alaskan Smoked Salmon Nova Lox due to the potential ofcontamination from Listeria monocytogenes, an organism known tocause symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness,nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Healthy people recover fairlysoon but Listeria infection may lead to miscarriages andstillbirths among pregnant women. This food was distributed inArizona, California, and Nevada.
