KENNEWICK, Wash. - It's no secret prices at the pump are putting astrain on the American economy. For some, it's an irritatinginconvenience. For others, it's forcing them out of business.
Janet Lindsey is packing it up.
"I'm selling everything I've got," said Lindsey.
Everything from coffee makers to the kitchen sink. Lindsey runs adeli and speciality item store in Kennewick called K & JDelectable Gourmet. But now she claims gas prices are running her-out of business.
"I'm not making enough money here to cover the cost so it's easierto call it quits at this stage of the game," Lindsey said.
She said her supplier is charging more to ship the meat, and shecan't pass on the extra cost.
"Frankly, I don't think people would pay seven to eight dollars fora turkey sandwich," she said.
K & J isn't the only small business feeling the squeeze fromthe pump.
An area business advisor said gas prices are effecting all types ofcompanies. He believes more businesses will have to start holdingonto their spare change.
"We're going to be spending more of our dollars, yours and mine, onfuel which means there's going to be less dollars for other goodsand services that all our small businesses provide us," said BruceDavis, Certified Business Advisor, Small Business DevelopmentCenter for Columbia Basin College.
For Lindsey, she's just looking for a profit anywhere she can findit.
"What I can't sell here, I guess I'll take home and eat. So Iguess I'll eat really well for awhile," said Lindsey.
