SHADY HILLS — Two people died when a dump truck struck theircar on Shady Hills Road during a rainy rush hour Monday afternoon,according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver of the dump truck received minor injuries and was takento a local hospital, FHP spokesman Steve Gaskins said.
Gaskins said Monday evening he did not yet know the identities ofthe victims or how the crash happened.
The collision occurred just after 4:30 p.m. on Shady Hills Road,about 2 miles north of State Road 52. The route sees frequent trucktraffic from haulers going to the county's garbage incinerator andother industrial sites.
Traffic slowed to a crawl along the two-lane road as paramedicsworked and troopers investigated. A storm pelted the scene withsteady rain.
The dump truck, with the logo Cement Products of Hudson, sat on theshoulder of the road with its hood torn off. The cab of the truckwas not damaged.
Nearby, a black Ford Mustang was upside down and nearly sheared intwo. A yellow sheet lay across the side of the car.
The traffic tieup grew worse as rush hour wore on. Deputies had tofunnel north- and southbound cars alternately through a singlelane.
