It is believed to be a new opportunity for the company, which hassigned long-term titanium supply contracts with leading globalaircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus.
Titanium alloy, high temperature-resistant, light and high-strength, is one of major raw materials for engines and landinggears of jumbo aircrafts, said industry experts.
These days, the Chinese government has spared no efforts inadvancing its jumbo aircraft project in a bid to depend less onimported products in the aviation industry.
China Commercial Aircraft Co., Ltd., with registered capital of CNY19 billion, has been formed in Shanghai on May 11 withresponsibilities for the project.
Its shareholders include Shanghai Baosteel Group Corp., China'sbiggest steelmaker, and Aluminum Corp. of China (Chinalco), aleading alumina and aluminum products supplier in the country.
Remarkably, Baosteel has started preparations for the supply to theproject since 2007, and made great progress. For instance, it hassuccessfully produced 300M ultra-high-strength steel used to buildaircraft landing gears.
It can also supply the project with the products in the country'sfirst large-sized special metal and alloy plate and strip projectand a hot-extruded steel tube transformation project, which areunder construction for the moment.
Chinalco President Xiao Yaqing disclosed that his company had takena stake in the jumbo aircraft company in a bid to speed up R&Dof aluminum materials and new materials concerning jumbo jets, andfacilitate the materials supply to homegrown jumbo aircrafts.
Under its wing, Southwest Aluminum (Group) Co., Ltd. (SWA) startedlast September the construction of a production line with anapproximate investment of CNY 2 billion.
SWA, as one of the country's biggest aluminum processing companies, will turn out aluminum alloy heavy plates, which can be used in thejumbo aircraft project to make aerofoils, empennages, and panels.
Also, the company is set to form a complete heavy plate productionline by increasing key equipment for large-sized aluminum alloypre-stretching plate production.
The production line has started building currently. It is scheduledto be completed and put into operation within two years, and willhave a designed production capacity of turning 50,000 to 100,000tons a year.
It will be able to turn out products with quality close to aluminumalloy materials used in aircrafts by such companies as Boeing andAirbus, reports said.
