New single-bowl sinks offer practical style and eco-friendly benefits

The traditional two-bowl sink is not the only option and may not be the best option for every kitchen. More and more consumers are opting for a single-bowl style, one large bowl instead of two.

Larger sinks are highly practical as today most small items are placed in the dishwasher leaving larger pots and pans to be washed by hand. Premium kitchen sink manufacturers are offering more models and styles in the single bowl version so style is not a concern. They are also offering bowls with various depths (nine or ten inches) as well as tight Bowl Sinks corners for more space inside the bowl. These space-enhancing features make it all the easier to wash up larger items even with limited counter space.

Large, single bowls offer bold style and some of the industrial designs (with square corners) feature minimalist chic. But smaller single bowls are also available for smaller kitchens or for kitchen islands or bars.

"We are seeing a definite increase in interest from consumers in the single-bowl sink," says Alexandra Marshall, marketing director with Blanco Canada. "In fact, we are adding many more single-bowl models this spring in different sizes and shapes to suit any kitchen, and in both premium stainless steel and natural granite. There are also smaller single-bowl models for islands that match the main sink design for a consistent look."

There may be an added environmental benefit to selecting a larger sink. If we get back to doing more dishwashing by hand, that can save energy. Whether for style, practicality or environmental concerns, consumers are shaking off preconceived notions about two-bowl sinks and realizing all they need is one big bowl.
