Get in, or get out.
You know the story. The Green Bay Packers bid a fond farewell to aweepy Favre in early March. He was hanging up his cleats and goingback home to Kiln, Miss.
The NFL Hall of Fame would be his first stop after his retirementhit the five-year mark.
Recently, Favre had a presidential candidate's moment. He changedhis mind. Favre claimed he had an itch to play again. There mustnot be a dermatologist in Kiln.
The Packers didn't exactly plan a ticker tape parade for Favre. They refused his request to be released from the team. Theycorrectly pointed out he is still under contract with the team.
They said he certainly could return to the Packers, but implied hewould serve as a backup to untested quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Yousee, the Packers have moved on. But Favre keeps showing up in theirrearview mirror. Another change
Favre should consider becoming a race car driver. I can see himdriving the No. 4 Waffle House car.
I think we can safely assume his days wearing a Packers uniform areover. He's about as interested in becoming a backup quarterback asRick Reilly is in writing obituaries. It's not going to work.
Just before this year's draft, Favre called the Packers and said hehad changed his mind. He had given it deep thought and wanted tocome back.
Coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson both signedoff on it. In return, they wanted Favre to make sure Rodgers waswilling to play behind him for another year or two.
Favre agreed. They scheduled a time and date to fly to Mississippiand have another press conference announcing Favre's return to thegame.
Days before it was to happen, Favre called and informed them hismind had flipped once more and he was certain that retirement wasin his best interest. Front office stunned
Dazed by the news, the Packers had to change their draft plan. Theytook Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm with the second of twosecond-round picks. With Rodgers and Brohm, the Packers thoughtthey had the future covered at that all-important position.
So what do they do with Favre?
A trade is the most likely scenario. Too many bruised feelings havefestered between the two sides, mainly because of poorcommunication, for Favre to remain a Packer.
They won't trade him to a Minnesota or Chicago and risk elevatingthose teams to Super Bowl contenders. On the other hand, Favrewon't go to a bottom-feeding team.
He had the best deal. His face was the face of Green Bay. Theirteam was on the cusp of playing in the Super Bowl six months ago.Yet, he failed to wait and let the season's disappointmentdissipate before announcing to the world he was through.
Make up your mind, Brett. You've created a circus.
