Stop and think what that cap may stand for

THURSDAY MORNING I came across the article " Pink hats drive some Sox fans batty " on boston.com , and had to respond. I am 36 years old, have lived in Boston mywhole life (except for college), and am a Red Sox fan. Last year Iwas given a "special" pink hat, one with a white "B," which I callmy unlucky lucky hat. Why? Because it was given to me by a friendwho was at Fenway on Mother's Day last year, and who bought the hatto support breast cancer research. Why did she give it to me?Because two months earlier I had been diagnosed with breast cancerand had just had surgery.
I know many breast cancer survivors hate pink, just as some Soxfans do, but my friend's kind gesture brought tears to my eyes. Iwore my hat a lot last year, especially when I was bald afterlosing my hair to chemo.
Does wearing a pink hat make me any less of a fan? I don't thinkso. Maybe people should think twice about what the hat stands forbefore they start to stereotype. And to the naysayers out there:Maybe you will forgive me for my pink ribbon hat if you knew that Isaw Yaz hit his 3,000th hit in Fenway Park with my Dad on Sept. 12,1979, a night that I will never forget.
