Frankfurt, Germany - Fans of plastic clogs should trust their senseof smell and steer clear of unpleasant smelling shoes. Most plasticclogs, which have been on the market for only a few years, containquestionable or controversial substances, according to the Julyedition of a German consumer magazine published in Frankfurt.Buyers should also be aware that even plastic clogs that have aneutral smell can be suspicious. Socks or anklets can protect the skin somewhat from toxicsubstances, according to testers who reported their findings in themagazine Oeko-Test. They found most plastic clogs have an elevatedconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or PAHs, whichare a concern because some compounds in them have been identifiedas carcinogenic and some have been found to alter genetic material. Some clogs were found to have elevated amounts of lead, chromium orcadmium. Chemicals used to make the clogs soft were found to beless problematic. The magazine, however, concluded that there wasonly one brand that could be recommended without restrictions.
