A lot of kids are wearing those bright, colorful clog shoes called"crocs." But The Good Housekeeping Research Institute hassome safety concerns.
Miriam Arond says, "at the Good Housekeeping ResearchInstitute we became concerned when we learned of reports ofchildren becoming injured while riding escalators and wearing crocsor flip flops. So we decided to look into it, and to see whatparents can do about choosing footwear for their children that willbe safe."

Emma Hochberg of Westchester, New York, says she was severelyinjured when her Croc was sucked into an airport escalator. "When the resin material from which Crocs is created makescontact with the side of an escalator, the foot will get suckedinto the mechanism of the escalator and take the child's foot withit," says Hochberg's lawyer.

Textiles Director, Kathleen Huddy says, "these types of shoescan put kids at risk because they're really only to be used for thebeach or the pool. When you're going to places such as ball gamesand amusement parks they should really be wearing close-toedshoes."
With summer just around the corner, Good Housekeeping suggests someshoes that kids will like and are safe to wear. They recommend theL.L Bean Explorer Sandals, The Lands' End Beach Trekker shoes andthe L.L Bean Keen Sandals. "These are a wonderful pair ofshoes from Keen. It has adjustable laces that can be tightened. It has a velcro strap so that the arch area can be tightened, andits closed in the back. We also love the Beach Trekker shoes byLands' End. They have the covered toe, the back is supportive andthey have a really good tread. Another shoe that we likeespecially for the little ones is the Explorer Sandal from L.L.Bean. Its got a really good tread so that the little ones won'tget hurt," says Huddy. The Keen sandals costs $50. The BeachTrekkers sandals and the Explorer sandals both cost $29.50.
