(not applicable) Landowners in Solomon Islands can expect to engage in growing a newforestry tree species with the help of Vanuatu.

Minister for forestry, Sir Allan Kemakeza says he had made a dealwith his counterpart in Vanuatu to assist Solomon Islanders engagein growing a very valuable tree species, the sandal wood.

The Minister says he was very impressed with the high value addedreturn for the sandal wood species.

He says the species does not have to grow so big before harvest,and is well known for its high value of oil which is extracted andproduced into expensive perfume.

Sir Allan says a delegation from Vanuatu to follow up his recentvisit will arrive in Honiara tomorrow to sign a memorandum ofunderstanding with the Solomon Islands government.

He says the MOU will oblige both parties to start serious work onimplementing the development scheme.

Sir Allan says the development is in line with the protocols ofMelanesian Leaders seminar held recently in Port Vila, Vanuatu,aimed at strengthening and increasing trade between MSG countries.

The Minister returned at the weekend from a one week tour ofVanuatu on an exploratory fact finding mission.
