Goosetown to begin today

Fans and competitors will head to Washoe Park for a women’shome run derby at 10:20 p.m. on Friday and the wildly popularmen’s home run contest on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.

With a minimum estimate of 5,000 softball enthusiasts heading toSouthwest Montana, area

businesses will experience an increase in customers.

“I would not be far off to

estimate that the economic impact for the Anaconda merchants aloneis over $1 million, with another quarter of a million going toButte,” longtime tournament

director Bill Hill said. “I figure we bring in 5,000 peoplefor the weekend, which should help our economy.”

The event, for some, brings enough profit to carry some businessesfor an entire year,

organizers claim.

Also important are the players who grew up in the area beforemoving to other locales of the country. Hill said that at least 40teams are from out of state this year.

“Lots of Anaconda people return just for the GoosetownTournament,” Hill said. “I have at least 40out-of-state teams entered. Most of these people have good payingjobs and spend big bucks while they are here.”

Hill set up extra security this year. He hopes the extra help willspoil any misbehavior.

“We are doing a lot to help increase security for thetournament, but to be honest, the tournament has been pretty freeof problems for 34 years,” he said. “Each year we takea look at what we can improve on for next year and make changes forthe improvement of security and to improve the tournament for theteams coming into play. We are not bulletproof, but we work hard attrying to make the tournament safe and attractive for everyoneinvolved.”

Teams that finish in the top four in their division earn invites tothe WSL (World Softball League) National Tournament in Las Vegasnext month.

On Saturday and Sunday, teams are invited to afternoon barbeques atthe Club Moderne.

A television crew will also be taping the event. In 2005, Softball360 named Goosetown the nation’s “funnest”tournament and one of the three best tournaments in the country.

Games begin this afternoon and end on Sunday evening.
