Israeli army says Palestinian killed near Gaza fence

JERUSALEM : Israel says that troops have killed a Palestinian after he crossedthe Gaza fence into Israel.
The army spokesman says that troops fired on the Palestinian afterhe did not respond to warning shots and calls to stop. The armysays the soldiers believed that the Palestinian was armed. Thespokesman says that troops later saw that the Palestinian did nothave a weapon.
The death was apparently the first since a June 19 cease-firebetween Israel and the Hamas rulers of Gaza. The truce has beenmarred by ongoing rocket fire from the Gaza Strip. Israel hasresponded by closing crossings into the Gaza Strip for many of thedays since the cease-fire.
The restrictions imposed a year ago have prevented basic goods likeshoes, computer paper and cement from entering.
