By all indications, it seems like Eisenhower’s girls soccerteam is concentrating on one thing only, a state championship.
The Eagles, who entered last Tuesday night’s districtquarterfinal game ranked No. 6 in Division 1 by the Michigan HighSchool Soccer Coaches Association, played host to Walled LakeNorthern, which entered the contest as an Honorable Mention inDivision 1.
That didn’t seem to bother Eisenhower, which rolled to a 6-0halftime lead, en route to an 8-0 mercy victory.
“I’m very surprised to be truly honest,” Eisenhowercoach Mehrdad Nekoogar said. “We’ve never played them, but based on what I heard from other coaches and what I saw,I’m very surprised.”
Eisenhower opened the scoring with 30:16 left in the first halfwhen Aubrey Sudomier scored off a pass from Alyssa Telang, whopicked up the first of her three first-half assists.
Telang made the score 2-0 with 16:46 left, scoring off a pass fromSudomier. That goal seemed to open the flood gates as the Eaglesadded two goals from Megan Marsack and one each from Shelly Rogersand Nicole Vick. Vick also had an assist, as did Christine Kelly.
“I think we played very well the first half,” Nekoogarsaid. “We moved the ball very well and more than anything elseyou could see they were on a mission. They didn’t take theother team for granted and went out and got the job done.”
Eisenhower needed only 18:24 to finish off Northern in the secondhalf as Natalie Galouska scored a goal and Telang notched hersecond goal of the game.
“Telang is doing what she’s been doing all yearlong,” Nekoogar said. “Aubrey’s only a freshman whoI discovered late this season. She was nervous at the beginning ofthe season and wasn’t comfortable with the other players. Asthe season went on she jelled more and more and now she is aconfident player.”
Eagle goalkeeper Joanna Hinde earned the shutout in goal, makingseven saves. The win improved Eisenhower’s record to 17-0-1overall and moved the Eagles into the May 29 district semifinalagainst Stoney Creek.
“The girls are on a mission this year and hopefully they cancontinue playing like they did today,” Nekoogar said.“(Walled Lake Northern) plays hard and very physical. We weresolid all over the field, though.”
