Hall of Fame Drivers to duel in Goshen

The field is developing for the Mr. and Mrs. Elbridge GerryMemorial Trot for Hall of Fame drivers on July 6 at Historic Trackin Goshen, New York. The drivers, all Hall of Fame members, includeJohn Campbell, Jim Doherty, Mike Lachance, Berndt Lindstedt, BobMcIntosh and Ron Pierce. Two more drivers may be added soon for afull field of eight. The drivers will meet and greet the public andsign photos after the race.
Historic Track, dating to 1838, is the country’s oldestactive horse racing track. There’s been trotting racing inthe village of Goshen since the Revolutionary War era and it willagain take place over the Fourth of July holiday; July 2, 3, 4, 5and 6 at 1 p.m. True to history, there is no betting and stablesare open to the public. The track, at 33 Park Place, is on theNational Park Service's registry of historic landmarks and islocated in the heart of the small town.
Racing fans sit in a circa 1920 grandstand that was a gift fromphilanthropist Mary A. Harriman. Races for New York-sired horsestake place on July 2, 5 and 6 with Landmark Stakes events on July 3and 4, along with races for amateur drivers. Ladies take the stagein the Dr. Farrell Memorial race on July 5. Fans can cheer HarnessRacing Hall of Fame drivers and meet them in an autograph sessionafterward on July 6. Directly adjacent to the racetrack, at 240 Main Street, is theHarness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, which offers free admissionfrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Housed in a 1920s-era Tudor carriagehouse, the museum interprets the history of harness racingthroughout the world and is home to several priceless collectionsand a race simulation theater that lets visitors feel the wind blowin their face as they “drive” in an actual race.
