A long with a sensational pair of hands, game-breaking speed, greatinstincts and awe-inspiring athleticism, we’ve learned a lotmore about Randy Moss during the past year.
For one, he has a special place in his heart for kids, especiallythose in his hometown of Rand, W. Va.
On Friday and Saturday, he hosted the Links for Learning/Randy MossFoundation Golf Tournament at Sleepy Hollow Golf Club in Hurricane,W. Va.
The event was the fund-raising kickoff for a foundation that willprovide learning centers for children in southern West Virginia.
Moss was joined by his former Dupont High basketball teammate JasonWilliams, now with the Miami Heat, and New York Jets [ team stats ] quarterback Chad Pennington [ stats ] .
Moss spent part of Friday handing out shoes to youngsters at theKing Center and Roosevelt Neighborhood Center in Charleston, W. Va.
According to Tim DiPiero, who represents Moss, the wide receiverhanded out 200 pairs of athletic shoes from Pony, which Moss has anendorsement deal with. He also spoke to the kids, urging them tohug their parents and grandparents.
DiPiero relayed one anecdote about a 6-year-old boy whodidn’t think it was cool to hug his dad.
“He told Randy he thought hugging his dad was gay,”DiPiero said. “Then Randy pulled up a chair and sat the kidalongside him. He had a little talk with him. He assured himhugging your daddy is OK. Then he got him to pinkie-promisehe’d hug his dad. Then he gave him his shoes. That was a coolmoment.”
Moss has paid to bus kids to amusement parks, to NBA games inCleveland and to NFL games in Cincinnati when he played there.
“It is very important for us as adults to lead a positivelife and set an example for these kids,” Moss told theCharleston Gazette following the event. “I have goals, andone of my main goals is to better the kids.”
The receiver also said he wasn’t dwelling on the Pats’17-14 loss to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl.
“It’s just a game,” he told the Gazette.“It’s not the end of my life. That’s what I dofor a living, so the good thing about that is I can gear back upfor the following year. I’m excited about this year.”
