I'm thinking about getting a kitten. I've never had one before andsomebody told me that you have to proof your house so the kittencan not get into mischief. Is this true? Lorenzo, via e-mail
Before you get your new pet think very carefully about it becausethis is going to be a long commitment. When you are sure about yourdecision I would strongly suggest going to an animal shelter andrescuing an unwanted kitten. You will be helping the rescue centreand giving the little cat a lovely new life. Once home, you'll haveto protect them from dangerous distractions such as wires, elasticbands, curtain cords and blinds. Would you believe it, some houseplants can be very poisonous, so be warned. Socket covers are alsovery good products to invest in.
After you've got safety under control you can concentrate ongetting the correct environment for your new kitten to thrive in.It may sound stupid but getting the right type of feeding bowl isvery important. Some cats do not like the smell of plastic. It'salways better to use shallow ceramic bowls and these should bewashed daily. Note that your kitten will scratch a lot until itgets used to its collar, which should have an ID tag on it. If itgoes outside you must get a cat collar with a safety snap so he orshe can get out of it if need be. Good luck!
