Spring Lake: $5.7 million budget approved

The budget focused on addressing a deficit of $370,000 in thegeneral fund and $147,000 in the enterprise fund.
Alderman Napoleon Hogans made a motion to adopt the budget with theexception of funds set aside for the town’s performance-basedemployee bonus program.
Hogans wanted that money, which Coats was unable to estimate invalue, to be redistributed to all employees as cost-of-livingadjustments.
The town was unable to provide employees with COLAs for fiscal 2009because of budget constraints.
The original motion died without a second, and the budget waspassed as presented.
What they said: “I think re-implementing the COLAs should be a priority forthe finance committee,” Mayor Pro-tem James P. O’Garrasaid. “We’ve got some cleaning up to do first.”
Other business: Development company McCormick Farms petitioned the board to annexapproximately 29 acres of land along Spring Avenue. A publichearing will be held at the July 21 meeting on the annexation.
The board approved the 2008-09 work plan as presented by countyplanning director Tom Lloyd and town planning director Tom Spinks.
Items on the work plan include revisions of the town’szoning, subdivision and sign ordinances; the development of anannexation study; a study of impact by BRAC on the Bragg Boulevard,Murchison Road and Lillington Highway corridor.
