MILAN : What does it say about a label when they fill the hotly foughtover front row of a fashion show with quirky stuffed animals? Is ita subtle snub to the critics, a joyful lark or just a new way tofill seats? Whatever the case may be, at the Moschino menswear show ladybugs and lobsters, fish and octopi and thehouse's fetish white goose sat shoulder-to-shoulder with some ofthe top names in the business to watch a collection of punky picnicclothes traipse down the runway.

Not surprisingly, there was a lot of gingham check, from the topsof shoes to the suits and shirt and, of course, the bow ties. Theslim-fitting suits got their punk on with industrial zippered pantspockets as well as vests and blazers festooned with rows of whitepearl buttons. Safety pin print T-shirts and smoky plastic bikerjackets were other ways of infusing the collection with rockerattitude while the now-familiar "fun" aspect of the collection camein the shape of colorful, embroidered mini hearts, sunglasses andpins scattered about the hips of black jeans, a peace symbol printsweater and the random picnic basket accessory.

It was a collection that stayed true to its chosen theme withoutquite reaching the tipping point when theme turns into gimmick. ButI wonder if the ladybugs and lobsters would agree.
