For the past few weeks, Evelyn Burrow has been digging through her collection of personal vintage clothing items being displayed this weekend at a fundraiser centered around fashion.
In doing so, the 89-year-old Cullman resident has excavated a lifetime of memories.
Select pieces from Burrow’s assemblage — including elegant evening gloves, sophisticated shoes and imported accessories — will be exhibited during the Ms. Senior Cullman County Fashion Parade being held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Northbrook Baptist Church’s Atrium Room.
Many of the life events linked to the items of clothing require no reminder — such as the dress Burrow wore to John F. Kennedy’s presidential inauguration, a belt worth thousands of dollars given to her during a visit to Johannesburg, South Africa and items worn when Burrow watched the race horse Secretariat win the Triple Crown. “I saw all three of them,” she said about the races.
“It’s kind of been fun for her to dig (the clothes) out,” said Burrow’s niece, Jackie Cook Porter, who is helping to put on the fundraiser. “It’s helped her to replace a lot of memories,” added Porter, the director for the Cullman County Miss Senior Pageant Committee.
While looking over the clothes together Wednesday morning, Burrow had a story to accompany almost every item.
She recalled how she got a $900 dress for $100 in exchange for modeling the garment. She also thought back on the boutiques where she bought some of the items of clothing.
Burrow also remembered long gone days when Americans dressed more formally.
“You wore a hat and gloves to church back in those days,” Burrow said. “You didn’t dare go to church without a hat. They don’t do that anymore.”
Cook said some of the event’s organizers enjoyed an apparel play day while taking photographs of Burrow’s items.
“Those women went wild,” Cook said. “It was like a bunch of young kids playing dress-up. They were trying on those shoes and trying on those hats and opening every hat box.”
For most women, Cook said fashion never grows old.
“It really never ends,” Cook said about the interest in style. “We remain pretty interested in the types of things we wear.”
However, Cook said Saturday’s event is not just for the ladies. She said and children’s clothing will also be displayed during the fashion review.
Cook said her aunt was wise to hang on to her garments.
“Some of those shoes that are 50 and 60 years old — you can see similar ones in stores today. So I say hold on to your clothes,” Cook said. “It’s a vicious circle — they’ll all come back,”
Burrow agreed. “These shoes that are 40 to 50 years old are exactly what you can buy today.”
Several of Burrow’s clothing items will eventually be a permanent display at the future Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, which will also house a $9.5 million art collection donated to Wallace State Community College in 2004. The assemblage contains more than 5,000 pieces collected by the Burrows during their international travels.
Burrow and her late husband created a $1 million trust that made possible the facility that is expected to open by the fall of 2009.
“Her legacy will live on forever in the walls of Wallace State,” said college president Vicki Hawsey.
Admission to the fundraiser where a light brunch will be served is $12 per person. Tickets are available from Cullman County Miss Senior Pageant Committee members, the Commission on Aging Office, Cullman Regional Medical Center, Merchants Bank and Ingle Park Recreation Center.
Area merchants participating in the event include Doncaster Clothing, Just for Looks, JC Penney, Classy Lady, First Avenue, Bridals & Formals, Better Than Before, Goody’s, Maurice 1561, Aces of Paris and Cutie Patooties.
For more information, Cook can be reached at 734-9655 or 347-4681. Money raised from the event will benefit the Cullman County Miss Senior Pageant Committee.
