Don't hurry and don't settle when it comes to footwear

[2008-3-31]

Q:  I recently bought two expensive pairs of shoes that felt comfortable enough in the store, but within a week, it was clear that one shoe invariably left my foot sore at the end of the day. Is there anything to do as a solution?

A: Take the shoes back to the store. Tell them your problem. See what they can do to help.

Most stores will make an attempt to remedy the problem. If they won't, I can suggest a partial answer. Usually a good shoe repair shop can stretch the shoe that is giving you trouble, which might help a tiny bit.

But in the future, the real solution is finding the right size shoes, which is possible if you follow a few simple rules.

Shoe shopping is not an activity to be taken lightly or to be rushed. Since quality shoes are expensive and you will have them for years, it pays to devote time and thought to the purchasing process. Don't hurry and don't settle.

If you never had trouble finding comfortable shoes, I would say you could shop anywhere ... in a department store, a discount store or an outlet store. But since you are a less-than-easy fit, you need to take some precautions.

First, find a service-oriented shoe store with people who know shoes and know how to fit you. Spend a few minutes looking around. Don't accept the first salesperson who approaches you, but seek out a seasoned veteran and ask questions. You might even ask for the manager and explain that you are "a difficult fit" and need someone who is knowledgeable to help you.
