Mom's Weekend Fashion Show shows off style
[2008-4-14]
Eighteen students in Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles will participate in the Form Follows Fashion: The 25th Annual Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show on Friday.
At the show students will have the chance to show off their own clothing lines in front an audience from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Beasley Coliseum.
The show’s planning was divided into a two-part class. In AMDT 411 in the fall, students spent the semester developing their clothing line, forming themes, choosing colors and making designs. In AMDT 412 in the spring, the students set to work on creating their outfits.
Katie Daly, a senior AMDT major and designer for the show, created a retro theme.
“I’m going for a 1960s look, so I watched a lot of videos on hippies for inspiration,” she said.
Designers can have between four and seven outfits per line. Senior AMDT major Hannah Eather created a line of ready-to-wear apparel, including jeans, T-shirts, windbreakers and short-alls, a form-fitted, modern spin on the overall.
Senior AMDT major Lacey Wilmot will feature a line of dresses inspired by classical music pieces.
“I looked at the melodies in music and tried to match them to my designs,” she said. “The song ‘La Primavera’ is about spring, so I used bright green and pink for that dress. Another song is about the ocean, so I made a blue dress with a huge fluffy train to depict waves.” A group of seven faculty members watched a dress rehearsal Wednesday to judge the apparel. The judges decided awards during the rehearsal that will be announced at the show Friday night. Professional pictures were also taken for students to to put into their portfolios.
Bob Hubner, the photographer for the event, has been taking pictures for the fashion show for 11 years. Fashion Show Director Carol Salusso said the pictures are the most important part of the show for students because it allows them to have a professional portfolio when they graduate.
