Corduroy: A fashion statement away from Indian mills

[2008-3-31]

DENIM HAS lost its charm and the denim manufacturers are not able to understand how to revive. Fashion industry used soft and rich corduroy fabric instead of denim to give tough and casual look, which was well accepted by the consumers. Corduroy, once considered an inexpensive basic, is clearly enjoying its best moments at the cost of more known blue denim.

Till a few seasons back, it was inconceivable for a designer with some standing to put his or her collection in corduroy. They were shy of demanding the right price for the product due to its image of a casual, less expensive fabrication to sell; they weren’t sure if the garment could be sold at designer price points. Just as sailors’ rugged fabric became sensation of youth, corduroy – once middle class’s fabric – got acknowledged by the best signatures of the fashion industry.

The boom for both denim and corduroy was witnessed, and new treatments and sophisticated washing methods were developed by garment finishers to give new soft and trendy appearance. Addition of stretch gives it flexibility and sexy look. Its tremendous comfort makes women feel wonderful. Comfort is main determining factor for a woman to choose apparel. Working women prefer to wear one comfortable outfit and do multiple activities instead of different dresses for each. According to one fashion survey, more than two/third working women gave comfort as the number one reason while choosing an outfit.
