Safe Kids to host safety events

Summer has arrived and for children, that may mean spending moretime outside. “Whether it’s boating, swimming, orbiking, the kids should practice safety,” said ChristyHubbard, director of Safe Kids, Columbus.

Safe Kids will have a bike rodeo, life jacket giveaway and a watersafety program for children ages 4 to 14 and their parents.

The bike rodeo is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the ColumbusLibrary on Macon Road. It will include free helmets on afirst-come, first-served basis, helmet fittings, a safety obstaclecourse and a bike tune-up area.

There will be a life jacket giveaway from 5 to 7 p.m. June 13 atthe Lake Oliver Marina and another one from noon to 2 p.m. June 14at Lake Harding at the Department of Natural Resources boat ramp.Attendees can get a life jacket fitting and water safetyinformation including emergency procedures while boating. Thegiveaway is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The water safety program is from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. June 18 and July9 at Psalmond Road Recreation Center Pool in Midland, Ga. Topicscovered will be water safety education and practice in and aroundthe pool. There will be free swimming from noon to 7 p.m. forparticipants. Recreation identification and registration isrequired for this event.

According to the Safe Kids Web site, “more children (ages) 1to 14 die from accidents such as motor vehicle crashes, fires,drowning, poisoning and falls than any other cause.”

Hopefully these events will prevent accidents from happening andeducate the parents and children on what is safe, Hubbard said.

A parent or guardian must accompany each child.
