I guess I must be ancient. When I attended school in the last greatIce Age, we learned of many religions without needing to practicetheir religious rites. We did so by studying books from thesereligions and reading tomes such as "Man and His Gods" aphenomenal book I highly recommend to those wishing to understandhow man has related to his gods. I find it amazing that teachers, the so-called guardians of ourvalues and of our republic, continue to inject their own personalbeliefs about religion into the classroom without regard to theConstitution or even state and federal laws. I realize thishappened in Britain and not the US but similar events have occurredin the US and continue to occur every day. One of my grandsons madethe statement to his mother that belief in Evolution was a matterof choice rather than a matter of science. I guess it doesn't seem so unreasonable to me. It seems more likean issue of respect. In a multi-cultural setting, instillingrespect for people who disagree with you is an important feature ofpublic education. ethwc on July 06 2008 13:10:05
Respect for other beliefs is an essential component of a tolerantsociety of the type we all wish to live in. However, forcingstudents to participate in ANY religious rite is not respect, it isforced religion and should not be tolerated. Our forefathers gotmost of their ideas from England and inculcated these into ourgovernment. Separation of church and state was believed by them tobe an essential element of freedom. Britain does not seem to havetaken this message to heart.
