It is by my book the largest catfish derby in the world, not justin the northeast as the sponsors advertise.
What makes the 28th Catfish Derby of Holyoke American Legion Post351 special, besides the fact it is one fun of a time, is where theprofits from the July 18 at 7 p.m. through July 20 at 2 p.m. go.
Proceeds, other than prize funding, go to the benefit of specialneeds children and has since Hector was a pup.
The post has never beat its own drum here. Nor about other worthyprojects, like the party for veterans from the Holyoke SoldiersHome and such.
It is not only a fun and family affair, there is also plenty ofcompetition between teams representing various sportsmen's andbenevolence clubs, as well as individual match-ups where you bet aten-cent cigar against your buddy's five-cent candy bar.
Let's digress one moment in my defense. At one time you could get afive-cent candy bar and it was more than twice the size of today's75-cent candy. While I never enjoyed a ten-cent cigar when I was akid ( who had ten cents?) they were out there. We rolled our ownand that made me a non-smoker the rest of my life. There issomething about ragweed seeds rolled inside a skunk cabbage leafthat would cure even the most avid smoker breathing his life toruin.
But I must confess while traveling through Greece and after a fineGrecian meal on the Isle of Santorini that we stopped in a smallstore and I pointed to a cigar that was hiding among a spaghettimixture of various shaped cigars and asked "How much?" and was told$40.
I asked how much that would be in American money and the littlelady with a stoic face like Geronimo in one of those old westernflicks said "Forty dollars."
I thanked her for helping me give up smoking and her smile provedwhat I've always believed, that a smile should be our internationallanguage and that if everyone in the world, especially thepoliticians, had a dog and a smile on their face, that there wouldbe no wars. Add the fact that I would have the politicians fightour wars - well you get it.
While I'm talking "eat-your-heart-out" prices of the past, when Iwas a kid penny candy cost a penny and not ten cents. Then therewere double features movies complete with comic shorts, acontinuous adventure series, the Pathay news, and either amagician, juggler or uni-cycle rider between movies, as well as anusher with a flashlight whose chief duties was to tell you to takeyour arm from around your girl's shoulders, all for twelve cents .
