After more than 40 years of married life, I've learned a fewthings. One is that women's clothing is priced in a rather peculiarmanner. Statistically, there are more women than men so one wouldthink that more women's clothing is manufactured than men's, so itshould, theoretically at least, be somewhat cheaper. However, I'vefound the exact opposite to be true.
Clothing for women is generally more expensive than clothing formen - and that's pretty much across the board. Whether it'ssweaters, garments, shoes, underwear, accessories - it's moreexpensive for the ladies than the guys.
I've noticed something else that doesn't seem quite right either. While strolling through a ladies' department in an upscale storeone day, tagging along behind Dearly Beloved , I spotted a bikini displayed on a mannequin. I peeked at theprice tag as I passed, and it was $40! "Look at that," I said to mywife, "$40 for a bikini, that's highway robbery. There's not enoughmaterial in that thing to make a decent handkerchief."
She gave me one of those looks that could have said, "Hello, wherehave you been for the past 40 years?" but to her credit, she didn'tsay it. But she did say, "And that's just for the top." Sureenough, I looked at the bikini bottom and they wanted another $35for that! Not only is women's clothing way overpriced, apparentlythe less material in a garment, the MORE money they ask for it.Somehow that doesn't quite add up, does it?
I shuddered with relief as I realized that DB would NEVER betempted to wear a bikini. Thank heavens - we probably couldn'tafford it!
GREAT EVENING: Last Saturday Dearly Beloved and I had dinner with one of the most delightful and beautifulyoung ladies you could ever hope to meet, Miss Cheyenne Cody , whose 12th birthday is coming up soon. Miss Cody was accompaniedby her "ever effervescent and lovely" grandmother, whose name isbeing withheld here to spare Grandma the pain of having to buy 200newspapers. Her residence probably doesn't have the space to spare! However, she will STILL have to buy 100 copies because I mentionedher granddaughter's name... right?
GAS SUBSTITUTE: Ocala's Jerry Britt; and Don Patscheider and Jack Jackson , both of Summerfield, have all sent in material about a newgeneration of automobiles - cars powered by compressed air.Compressed air engines are not exactly new. They've been usedbefore, but the technology has been improved to the point where youjust may start seeing air-powered vehicles on the streets in thenot-too-distant future. You can read about them at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_car .
GAS ADDITIVE: Ocala's J.J. Hennessy wrote: "Have you noticed those stickers on the gas pumps, 'Thisgas contains 10% or less ethanol?' BP, Albertson's and Racetrack I know have it. Haven't seen anything in the media about thisstuff. During the summer in the North, ethanol is added to gassupposedly because it burns cleaner. Expect gas mileage to plummet! My four-cylinder went from 28 to 20 MPG. Expect a V-8 that gets 15MPG to get 12 MPG or less."
J.J. , I think I heard something somewhere along the way about Congressmandating ethanol be added to domestic gasoline supplies. I triedethanol back in the 1980s, and found it totally unsuitable, atleast for the 1980 Jeep CJ-5 with a six-cylinder engine I owned atthe time, but I think the fuel was more than 10% ethanol. That wasan experience I do not wish to repeat... ever!
