Ex-W.Pa. female cop sues over bulletproof vests

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. A former part-time police officer for a western Pennsylvania townsays she was fired because she complained officials boughtbulletproof vests only for men.

Tammy Kirsch says Cresson Borough fired her in April 2007, shortlyafter she complained about discrimination. She's suing the boroughfor unspecified damages in federal court in Johnstown.

Kirsch says officials fired her on the pretext that she wasn'tavailable for scheduled work. She says she'd never been disciplinedsince started with the borough in 1989.

Kirsch's lawyer says the borough began providing male officers withvests in 2001 using federal funds, but refused to buy them forwomen.

Cresson solicitor Calvin Webb says the borough hasn't done anythingimproper.
