Sunglasses on Friday were pressed to faces throughout Seattle. Thesun's rays bounced off Elliott Bay, as summer skirts and shortsreappeared on city streets.
But New York resident Doug Havnaer sipped a hot mocha outside aQueen Anne coffeehouse. "Have you ever lived in New York? Thisisn't hot," he said.
The 51-year-old will be happy to know that he can enjoy hot coffeeunder the sun in Seattle through Sunday.
The National Weather Service is forecasting beautiful, sunny daysfor this last weekend in June.
Saturday is expected to have high temperatures in the 80s and low90s, meteorologist Allen Kam said.
There's a chance that Sunday will be slightly warmer --particularly in areas away from the water.
"We'll be approaching records," Kam said. "We might be close andbreak one. ... It will be hot."
The sun's appearance gives parents of newborn babies -- who enteredthe world in early June -- the opportunity to hold them, point inthe sky and exclaim: "This is the sun. We call this the sun."
The record temperature to beat for a June 28 is 91 degrees, whichwas measured at Sea-Tac Airport in 1995. Weather Serviceforecasters expect the high Saturday to be 88 degrees.
The record for a June 29 was set in 1987, when the temperatureclimbed to 93 degrees at the airport. Sunday's heat is expected toclose in on 90 degrees.
By Friday at 4 p.m., the temperature at Sea-Tac was 78 degrees.
"Really, it's kind of the normal swing in weather that we have,"Kam said. "The only reason why we're noticing the warm-up isbecause it was cooler in June."
Those dark, wet days prompted people in Seattle to don gloves,overcoats, knit caps and scarves -- and to pray for the sun.
Kam said the hot weather should continue through Monday.
But cooler air will arrive by then and temperatures will be in theupper 70s to 80s.
Havnaer and his wife, Adriana, on Friday were visiting from NewPaltz, N.Y. They and a friend went for a bicycle ride to theBallard Locks and the Olympic Sculpture Park on the waterfront.
Adriana Havnaer celebrated her 52nd birthday on Friday. "It's awonderful birthday present," she said, referring to the sunny day.
Their friend, Queen Anne resident Lynn Beasley, filled them in onthe overcast days of early June.
"My garden is now blooming," the 59-year-old said. "This has beenthe best we've had (this summer)."
To relax, they rested on chairs outside Caffe Ladro and drankcoffee.
"When it gets hot, I might switch to iced coffee," Doug Havnaersaid, chuckling.
So, if he didn't think Friday in Seattle was hot, what is a hotsummer day in New York like?
