Bags of assorted rice found in Cavite apparel warehouse

[2008-4-16]

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines -- Police seized 334 bags of Thailand rice and 3,308 bags of other commercial rice varities in an apparel warehouse in Silang, Cavite on Monday, police said Tuesday.

Chief Superintendent Ricardo Padilla, Calabarzon police director, said the Silang police inspected three buildings of Boardwalk Business Rental in the village of Maguyam, Silang, Cavite following reports of rice hoarding in the area.

The police discovered two weighing scales, 99 empty sacks of NFA rice, 5,000 empty sacks of various kinds of rice, and another 24 cones of sack thread.

A brown record book with a list of the number of mixed NFA rice and imported rice, and a small notebook with a list of the number of NFA sacks the warehouse owners had received, were also found.

Padilla identified the owners as Melvin and Veronica Madera who have no permit to stock up on rice in the area.

According to police, Boardwalk, a direct-selling business of apparel products, has the license to operate as a warehouse.

Melvin and Madera were not seen during the inspection and had yet to report to the police, Padilla said.

The police conducted the inspection upon the order of Malacañang to arrest rice hoarders and illegal traders
