Poland: official estimations of harvest of onion, carrot, beet andcabbage

According to the information provided by the specialists ofFruit-Inform project, referring to the Main Statistics Departmentof Poland (GUS), production of vegetables will substantiallydecrease in the country in 2008. The main reasons are unfavorableweather conditions. Besides, great impact was caused by decrease ofprofitability of vegetable production in the last season.

The prospects of onion harvest in Poland were found lower thanprior expectations. In fact, exactly production of onion willdecrease more substantially  approximately by 20 % compared to thelast year. At the moment, the wholesale prices for onion in Polandvary within a range of 0.19  0.25 euro/kg , whereas in theSouthern regions of Ukraine the prices for onion total 0.10  0.14euro/kg. Thus, for today it is more profitable for Russiancompanies to purchase onion from Ukraine, even more so its importis not imposed with duties.

The prospects of cabbage production in Poland are slightly better,but nevertheless its production may decrease by 15 %. At themoment, the prices for cabbage in Poland and Ukraine arecomparable.

According to the forecasts of GUS, the harvest of carrot and beetin Poland in 2008 may decrease by 15 % compared to the last yearthat has already reflected on the prices. According to the data ofmonitoring of the wholesale prices, conducted by Fruit-Informproject's weekly, the prices for carrot and beet in Poland andUkraine are almost the same, although the prices were substantiallylower last year.
