Enjoy tasting a wide variety of baked goods and roasted garlic

The garlic, which is organically grown on Thorn Creek’shistoric farm, will entice visitors with its culinary delights andmedicinal uses.

Garlic will be for sale throughout the day. The Garlic Market Placewill be at the Nature Center, where a dozen different varieties ofgarlic will be sold. Garlic magnets, books, garlic roasters andkeepers and the garlic twist will also be for sale, as well asgarlic posters, which include information on taste and country oforigin for 43 different species of garlic.

For those who enjoy a nice walk in the autumn woods, there are falltrail guides available at the nature center, as well as aself-guided hike along the short-loop on Thorn Creek’s hikingtrails which is designed to teach hikers the changes that occur inthe forest during fall. University of Illinois Master Gardeners canbe found at the Nature Center and will answer questions aboutgardening.

Purchase tickets for the Garlic Basket Raffle while at the NatureCenter and take a chance on winning a basket. Tickets cost $1 eachor six for $5. Winners need not be present.

Enjoy tasting a wide variety of baked goods (most of which includea hint of garlic in them) and roasted garlic at the bake sale.Items for sale include garlic chocolate chip cookies, garlic breadand much more!

Shuttles will be available to transport visitors to the HistoricFarm, which is within the woods. Site managers of ThornCreek’s Historic Farm, Jon and Judy Mendelson, grow allgarlic species organically and are dedicated to the highest organicstandards and use only methods that maintain and enhance healthysoil. Both will be available at the farm to answer questions aboutthe benefits of buying and growing organically.

While at the farm, visitors will enjoy cooking demonstrations andlearn how to plant garlic as well as learning how to braid garlic.Garlic gurus will be available at both locations to providemini-lectures throughout the day. Lectures will feature topics suchas medicinal uses of garlic, how to pick garlic and organicgardening. Visitors can also enjoy a tour of the farm, stopping toobserve the many varieties of chickens and pausing to listen toJerry Santoni playing the hammered dulcimer.
