PETA is still vigorously pursuing its campaign against KFC in the U.S.

\Wearing a skimpy bikini made out of vegetable leaves, one ofPETA's lovely Lettuce Ladies will hand out delicious samples of thenew Classic Vegetarian Sandwich, which is now available at most KFCrestaurants in Surrey and throughout Canada. The newoffering--which has a flavour and texture similar to real chickenbut contains none of the cruelty or cholesterol--follows a landmarkagreement between PETA and United Purchasing Group of Canada(UPGC), the company that coordinates chicken purchases for CanadianKFCs. This agreement will mean less suffering for millions ofchickens raised and killed for KFC restaurants every year. Although PETA is still vigorously pursuing its campaign against KFC in the U.S. and elsewhere, the agreement ends the group's five-year campaignagainst KFCs in Canada . According to the new plan, UPGC will do the following:
· Phase in 100 percent of chicken-meat purchases from suppliersthat use controlled-atmosphere killing, the least cruel form ofpoultry slaughter ever developed
· Better monitor chicken suppliers in order to reduce brokenbones and other injuries
· Urge supply companies to improve lighting, allow more space forbirds, lower ammonia levels, and phase out growth-promoting drugsand breeding practices that painfully cripple chickens
· Form an animal welfare advisory panel
" Chickens killed for Canadian KFCs will be afforded better lives andgentler deaths, and most Canadian KFCs now offer a delicioussandwich that doesn't cost chickens a wing or a leg," says PETALettuce Lady Ashley Fruno .
