Leek stifles Crabs, leads Ducks to victory

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 27, 2008) - The Long Island Duckssnapped their five-game losing streak and defeated the SouthernMaryland Blue Crabs on Wednesday 4-1 before a sellout crowd of6,119 at Citibank Park.
Randy Leek (10-2) kept the Maryland bats in check, allowing justone unearned run on six hits over six innings of work. Blue Crabsstarter Ryan Bicondoa (11-6) suffered a rare loss, though it markedthe second time this season he was defeated by the Ducks. Therighthander allowed three runs on 12 hits over six and one-thirdinnings, striking out four. Ben Grezlovski delivered two shutoutinnings in relief for Long Island, and Charlie Weatherby shut thedoor for his third save of the season.
The Ducks got on the board early. Juan Francia picked up an infieldsingle and advanced to second base on a error. A wild pitch movethe speedster to third before P.J. Rose chased him home with a basehit to left. In the third, the Ducks increased their lead on atwo-run homer by designated hitter Kyle Nichols, the highlight in a3-for-4 night for the slugger. Francia had three hits as well andtwo runs scored. Ray Navarrete picked up an RBI on a groundout inthe eighth.
The Ducks wrap up their pivotal three-game series against thesecond-place Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday. Game time isscheduled for 7:05 p.m., and the Citibank Park gates open at 6:05p.m. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive team posters,courtesy of Newsday.
