Sunday bazaar roundup: Prices of onions, potatoes hike, flour remains scarce
* DCO suspends two inspectors over shortages of
onions and flour
* Customers complain of increasing prices, unhygienic conditionsand shortage of items

LAHORE: Onions and potatoes sold at comparatively high prices atSunday bazaars across the city, while people were seen pushing eachother to get subsidised flour due to its continuing shortage.

Sources said that as both of the vegetables are used in makingpakoras, hoarders had started to increase their sales as the holymonth of Ramzan approaches.

Also on Sunday, the district co-ordination officer (DCO) suspendedtwo sub-inspectors of the Shadman Sunday Bazaar market committee.DCO Sajjad Ahmed Bhutta paid a surprise visit to the bazaar andfound a shortage of onions and flour, over which he suspendedInspectors Khalid Siddiqui and Wajid Shah.

The DCO was also displeased over the scarcity of pulses atIslampura Sunday Bazaar, and ordered the market committee membersto ensure the availability of these kitchen items.

Angry customers: Meanwhile, customers were complaining over themeasures adopted by the government for the relief of the masses.

Adnan Tanveer, a customer at Gulshan-e-Ravi Sunday Bazaar toldDaily Times that the ever-increasing prices of basic commoditieswere making it difficult for people to manage their budget. Theincome of an ordinary man is very low, and items of daily use areexceeding our reach, he added.Saira Mumtaz, a housewife at ShadmanSunday Bazaar, said that it was difficult for her to manage herhouse budget as the prices of groceries changed every week. Flourhas become a rare commodity these days and one has to fight to geta flour bag, she said.

Shaista Khalid, another customer, complained about the unhygienicconditions of Shadman Sunday Bazaar and said that the governmentshould do something to lower the prices of essential commodities.

Many customers, complaining about uncovered meat being sold atSunday bazaars, said that the practice was against hygienicprinciples.

The prices of apples came down this week and good-quality appleswere available for Rs 54 per kilogramme, while guava was availablefor Rs 26 per kg.

Potatoes were sold at Rs 28 per kg as compared to Rs 26 of lastweek, ginger at Rs 74 per kg, tomatoes at Rs 42 per kg as comparedto last weeks price of Rs 38 per kg, and garlic was sold for Rs 36per kg.
