The impact of rain can be seen in the city's Rythu Bazars spreadover at various places. The roads, which the farmers aretransporting their vegetables from surrounding villages ofHyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts have been damaged due to heavyrainfall. Ninety per cent of the vegetables are transported throughmini vans and seven-seater auto rickshaws to the Rythu Bazars.
"It is a fact that due to road damages, 15 to 20 per cent arrivalsstopped to all Rythu Bazars in the city. As a result, the prices ofall varieties of vegetables will go up by Rs 2 to Rs 3. Mainly, theimpact will be shown on chillies, tomato, bhendi, brinjal and greenleaf vegetables," chief executive officer , Rythu Bazars PVenkateswarlu told 'TOI.'
He also said that the due to inundation, the labours lost theircrop. As a result, shortage of vegetables can become a majorproblem in the next few days. According to Venkateswarlu, the priceof chillies, which was at Rs 14 per kg has now gone up to Rs 16. Inthe open market, the traders are selling chillies at Rs 18 per kg.Like this, the price of tomato at Ryhu Bazars has increased from Rs6 per kg to Rs 8 per kg. According to reports, the traders in theopen market are selling tomatoes at even higher price.
The price of onion, one of the main ingredients in the vegetables ,also shot up. According to the reports from various Rythu Bazars inthe state, the price is Rs 10 per kg and it was gone up to Rs 15.In the open market, the traders are selling this commodity for Rs18 per kg.
However, impact also shown in two districts-West Godavari andKrishna. In these districts, road cut off in major areas and thereis no arrivals to the rythu bazars. Here, 25 to 35 per centarrivals stopped to the Rythu Bazars, said the official.
There is no problem to the vegetables coming to the city from otherparts of the districts , the CEO replied to a query. Meanwhile, thechief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy asked the officials ofmarketing , civil supplies and road and buildings to maintain thesame prices in the next three months. He responded when a seniorofficial has referred to hime about the rise of vegetables pricesdue to heavy rains during a tele-conference held on Sundayhere."Nearly 1,800 acres marooned in Ranga Reddy district," CMadded.
