The average temperature for Ohio was 74.4 degrees, 0.3 degreesabove normal for the week ending Sunday. Precipitation averaged0.18 inches, 0.66 inches below normal. There were 144 modifiedgrowing degree days, 18 days below normal. That's according to thestate field office of the USDA's National Ag Statistics Service.
Reporters rated 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork during theseven-day period ending Friday. Topsoil moisture was rated 0percent very short, 4 percent short, 85 percent adequate, and 11percent surplus.
The major field activities for the past week were cutting andbaling hay and harvesting winter wheat. Other field activities forthe week included baling straw, mowing, manure application,chopping haylage, oat harvest, fungicide and herbicideapplications, and installing drainage tile. The harvest of sweetcorn, peppers, cucumbers and zucchini is in progress. North Eastdistrict reporters observed that downy mildew, powdery mildew, andphytophthora blight are beginning to show up in cucumbers, squash,melons, and watermelons. Japanese beetles have been reportedthroughout the state.
As of Sunday, 98 percent of the winter wheat was harvested,compared to 100 percent last year and 94 percent for the five-yearaverage. Corn silked or tasseled was at 31 percent, which was 9days behind last year and 5 days behind the five-year average.Fifty-two percent of the soybeans were blooming, which was 8 daysbehind last year and five days behind the five-year average.Soybeans setting pods were at 5 percent, compared to 14 percent forboth last year and the five-year average. Forty-nine percent of theOats were ripe, which was 7 days behind last year and 3 days behindthe five-year average. Oats harvested were at 7 percent, comparedto 24 percent last year and 16 percent for the five-year average.Summer apple varieties were 40 percent harvested, which was 22percentage points ahead of last year and 18 percentage points aheadof the five-year average. Peach varieties were 12 percentharvested, compared to 17 percent last year and 15 percent for thefive-year average. Cucumbers were 8 percent harvested.
The alfalfa hay second cutting was reported at 74 percent, 9percentage points behind last year, but 7 percentage points aheadof the five-year average. The third cutting of alfalfa hay was at 5percent complete, compared to 10 percent last year and 4 percentfor the five-year average. Fifty-three percent of the other haysecond cutting was complete, compared to 52 percent last year and40 percent for the five-year average.
Corn condition was rated at 68 percent in fair-to-good condition,down 2 percentage points from last week. Hay condition was rated at71 percent in fair-to-good condition, down 2 percentage points fromlast week. Oats condition was rated at 74 percent in fair-to-goodcondition, compared to 82 percentage points last week. Pasturecondition was rated at 78 percent in fair-to-good condition,unchanged from last week. Soybeans condition was rated at 72percent in fair-to-good condition, down 1 percentage point fromlast week. Sixty-six percent of the winter wheat acreage was ratedin fair-to-good condition, down 5 percentage points from last week.Eighty-four percent of the livestock were in fair-to-goodcondition, up 1 percentage point from last week. South Eastdistrict reporters indicated that livestock look fine, but thereare a lot of deer flies and mosquitoes in pastures.
