Torres Strait funds to help tackle higher living costs

A total of $300,000 in Federal Government funding will be used tohelp offset rising living costs in the Torres Strait.
The Torres Strait Regional Authority says the money will go towardssustainable horticultural projects.
The deputy chairwoman, Napcia Bin Tahal, says communities havegrown traditional fruit and vegetables like casabas and taros butthey are keen to grow less starchy products.
"On Badu they're looking at establishing a community market garden,on St Paul's on Moa Island they're looking at a hydroponic foodproduction, the Horn Island Aboriginal Corporation is lookingimplementing ... integrated weed management eradication includingtrialing thermal weed eradication," she said.
"Hammond would be looking at the implementation of nursery hygieneand sustainable management practices."
