Fresh violence in Jammu

Jammu, July 26: In a fresh spate of violence in several parts ofthe old city, including Kanak Mandi and Purani Mandi, protestorshurled petrol bombs on police on Saturday. In response, the policefired tear gas shells to chase away the protestors.
 
At least 40 people, including 10 policemen, were injured, duringthe day-long clashes in which the demonstrators heavily stoned andeven lobbed petrol bombs on policemen. They also set ablaze avehicle and damaged many others. Scores of protestors were arrestedby police.
 
On the third day of violence in the city after the death of KuldeepRaj, who committed suicide in protest against the government's landrevocation order and statement of National Conference presidentOmar Abdullah that Kashmiri would not give even an inch of land toanybody, the protesters targeted JKP and used petrol bomb on thepolice parties deputed in various places inside the city.
 
Over 1500 people from Muthi, Domana, and Purkho assembled onJammu-Akhnoor road and burnt tyres in the middle of it. Theprotestors pelted stones on policemen. At this, the police resortedto cane charge and burst several tear smoke shells to disperse theviolent mob.
 
The protesters at Muthi Camp, an area dominated by migrant Kashmiri Pandits, who have been in the forefront of the on-goingagitation, tried to block Jammu-Poonch highway in the morning. Assoon as they burnt tyres to disrupt movement of vehicles, thepolice party reached the spot and tried to disperse them. Theviolent protesters, who outnumbered the police party, attacked theparty and caught hold of three constables of JK police.
