CONSUMERS are turning their backs on supermarket giants and savinghundreds of dollars by shopping at fresh fruit and vegetablemarkets. The new appeal of the rustic-style markets comes as shoppers try tofind better value for money, fresher and longer-lasting produce, amid rising prices.

A comparison by The Sunday Mail shows that a selection of fruit and vegetables priced at more than$70 at Brisbane supermarkets costs $40 at the markets.

Jan Power, organiser of the Brisbane farmers markets at Mitchelton, the New Farm Powerhouse and Manly, said crowd numbers had almostdoubled since Christmas.

She attributed this to people having less disposable income due torising living costs. "They're more careful these days andthey're looking for much better value for money," she said. Of the 5000-plus people who attended each of her markets, many werealso seeking high-quality produce that would last longer.
"They're buying something they know hasn't been in storage forsix months, so they're actually saving because they don'twaste," she said.

Caboolture Markets fruit and vegetable seller Jason Walsh estimatedcrowd figures at his markets had also doubled in the past 12months.

He said he was sometimes shocked by the number of people comingthrough, and said the savings and freshness of shopping outside ofsupermarkets was the big drawcard.

"When I first started 19 years ago it was older people, butnow it's people in their 30s and 40s with kids. They're coming tosave a few dollars." Mr Walsh said shoppers could buybetter-quality produce for as little as half the price of thesupermarkets.
