Kellogg Foundation Grant Supports Regional Fruit, Vegetable Farms. Red Tomato , a nonprofit in Canton, Massachusetts, that works to strengthenfamily farms and bring fresh, local produce to regional markets,has announced a three-year, $655,200 grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation .
 
Part of a multiyear Kellogg initiative to meet the increasingdemand for ecologically grown, affordable fresh fruits andvegetables in the Northeast and provide major support for localfood security by promoting the growth of sustainable agriculture,the grant will support Red Tomato's work with a network of morethan forty fruit and vegetable farms in New England, New York, andPennsylvania.

Red Tomato helps to brand, market, and promote thefarmers and their products through a program that combinesmission-based development and research with market-based sales andbrokering — all based on fair trade, ecological production,and building a sustainable local food system.
 
A portion of the funding also will support a partnership betweenRed Tomato and the Georgia field office of the Federation of Southern Cooperatives , which works with farmers to develop and market fruit andvegetable crops to local markets in the Southeast.
 
"Kellogg has been an important source of funding for a variety ofsustainable food projects, including Red Tomato, for a number ofyears," said George Riley, the organization's development director."This award is a significant sign that our work to support regionalfarmers and bring their products to consumers is yielding valuableresults."
