Whole Foods Pulls Tomatoes Off Shelves

Texas health officials have issued a warning about certain typesof tomatoes as they continue to investigate a Salmonella outbreak.As they work to determine the source, health officials are advisingpeople with increased risk of infection, including infants, theelderly and those with impaired immune systems to not eat any rawRoma or full-sized round tomatoes other than those sold attached tothe vine or grown at home.
Whole Foods is the latest market to take Roma and full-sized roundtomatoes off of it's shelves. Spokesperson Scott Simons says thecompany has made the move as a precaution. At this point, the TexasDepartment of State Health Services has not narrowed down if thetomatoes affect are organically or commercially grown.
The Texas Department of State Health Services, along with otheragencies, is investigating the possible source of the multi-stateoutbreak. So far, 21 confirmed cases have been reported in Harris,Fort Bend, Dallas, Tarrant, Hays and Cameron counties.
No deaths have been reported in Texas since the outbreak began inmid-April.
The department says the investigation is in its early stages, butconsumption of raw tomatoes has been targeted as the likely sourceof the Saintpaul strain of the Salmonella bacteria.
