"My front garden is rectangular, almost a square, and lends itselfto reverting to what we know it once used to be, a real cottagegarden.
"In my design, it has been organised to grow vegetables for thefamily, as well as being a place to grow some decorative flowers. Iam greatly influenced by the French potager gardens and a couple ofyears ago my family and I visited Villandry and a few other gardensin the Loire region. I have also researched on the internet otherFrench gardens and have been inspired by the way they mix flowerswith the vegetables.
"As well as the 3 raised beds, I have a 4th one on the other sideof the front path, that divides the garden. This has now been edgedwith box hedging recently, to give it a more formal feel. I have tobe careful what I plant here as it can lose moisture to thesurrounding trees.
"The raised beds are wonderful for courgettes and pumpkins. Thepumpkins have been a delight to grow and are part of a competitionheld with my American friend, who beat me last year with a largepumpkin grown from the seed I brought her back from Villandry!
"I love to see the look of the garden in Autumn, when these largefruits are ripening, adding vivid colours to the declining beds. Igrow most of the plants from seed, and have an on-going battle withthe blackbirds and snails. Last year the blackbird repeatedlyturfed out all my carrots, but this year, I have created adecorative frame with netting over it to prevent her loutishbehaviour!
