The prisoners were facing possible execution as secessionisttraitors.
Although Forrest is one of the more controversial personalities ofthe Civil War era, it is quite likely that a significant number ofdescendants of the "old families" of this area, particularly inCannon County and Woodbury, would not be here today if Forrest andhis men had not succeeded in freeing the Courthouse prisoners.
The early morning raid caught the Union forces unprepared forbattle. The fighting resulted in 229 casualties. Forrest lost 30men with 60 wounded, compared to 19 Union deaths and 120 wounded.
By making the federal commanders believe they were outnumbered, theraiders gained an unconditional surrender. The Confederatescaptured about 1,200 federal soldiers, half a million dollars worthof munitions and supplies, 60 wagons, 175 horses, 300 mules andfour cannons. The surrender papers were signed by Union Gen. T.T.Crittenden at Oaklands.
But why black-eyed peas and sweet potatoes!? According to oralhistories maintained by the Oaklands Museum, after the surrenderwas signed at the dining room table in the Maney home, the Maneyfamily served a meal for Forrest and the surrendering officers. Some years later, Rachel Maney explained that it was not animpressive table: "The Yankees had killed every peafowl, everyduck, every cow on the place. That night we ate baked sweetpotatoes and black-eyed peas."
The idea for an anniversary dinner of black-eyed peas and sweetpotatoes was suggested by James Patterson, Adjutant for the Sons ofConfederate Veterans Camp No. 33. The first anniversary meal washeld at Oaklands in July 1999. Patterson, an avid Civil Warre-enactor, explains that the supper is now established as anannual observance.
