Breakfast beats lunch at Cosmos

The attractive hanging lights, tile floors and light, clean colorsmade the atmosphere at Cosmos something to behold.

The former KFC on Washington Center Road has been transformed intoa thing of beauty. Its somewhat Mediterranean feel isn't quite asformal as, say, Casa Mare, but it makes places like its neighboringbreakfast mecca, IHOP, really seem boring and atmosphere-free.

Cosmos is a breakfast landmark of sorts in the Summit City, andthere is never a dead time to visit on a Saturday or Sundaymorning. On the Saturdays I visited, the place was packed, but Iwas seated swiftly and its busy nature didn't keep me from beingattended to promptly. My coffee cup never went cold, and my mealsreached the table within 10 minutes on both visits. Apparently, being busy all the time makes it easy to deal with; who wouldathought?

If you are after a real treat for breakfast, try the French treat -French toast stuffed with Canadian bacon and cheddar-cheesescrambled eggs. With four slices of fatty, salty Canadian baconsandwiching the eggs inside this sandwich, it sort of reminded meof an Egg McMuffin, only fresher and better. Or, maybe it is abreakfast Monte Cristo. Regardless, the big, yellow, egg-dredgedslices of grilled bread were thick and fresh, and it just needed alittle dip into syrup to make it perfect. The ripe honeydew andorange wedge garnishes were left behind as the girth of thissandwich made the meal plenty filling.

Even more filling was the western skillet. A base of al-denteonions and peppers and hash-brown potatoes is topped withcheddar-jack cheese, diced sausage links and eggs any style - overeasy in this case. The potatoes were browned and crisp on theoutside and light and fluffy inside, the yolk acted as a delightfulsauce, and the only disappointment - a slight one, at that - wasthat the sausage was ground and fried together with the potatoesand veggies.
