Their shop makes more than 40,000 religious icons and six or seventons of incense each year.

The icons are artistic, stylized images of Eastern Orthodox saints,or Jesus Christ, portrayed on laminated, bevelled wood. The Swartzendrubers got into the business, a little at a time, about 15 years ago, when a monastery located in rural Geneva askedthem to produce icons for their product line, run by the SacredHeart Foundation.

The monks later moved to New Mexico, but they kept the businessgoing, and, over time, the Swartzendruber’s business grew.

It works like this: The couple receives orders through thefoundation in Cincinnati, she said. They order the images for the icons from the monks’ photolab, mount the images onto boards and laminate them. Painting onthe bevelled edges is done by hand. The Swartzendrubers also employsome help from the area, or college kids home on break.

The icons can range from a few inches to up to 9 feet tall. As theonly manufacturer of this kind of icons in the nation, KaySwartzendruber said, the company ships their products all over theworld. The ingredients from incense also come to Shickley from the otherside of the world, often India or Sumatra: frankincense, sandalwoodand benzoin gum.

The exotic powders are mixed with molding plaster, cornstarch andscented oils of various flowers to create the fragrances. The mix is baked into pellets, then dried, then ground and dyed redor gold. “We have a secret recipe the monastery came upwith,” Swartzendruber said.
