Daewoo Shipbuilding Lands Huge Container Ship Contract

South Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine, the world's No. 3 shipyard, said Friday that it had won an orderto build 16 container vessels for Danish shipping and oil firm A.P. Moller-Maersk. This was the shipbuilder's biggest contract ever negotiated.
Daewoo Shipbuilding signed an agreement with Maersk Line, adivision of the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, on Thursday in Korea for the delivery of 16 container vesselsin the 2010-12 time period. The vessels will have individualcapacities of 7,450 TEU, or twenty-foot equivalent unit, and areequipped with reefer (refrigerated container) plugs enabling themto carry 1,700 refrigerated containers each. "This is the highestnumber ever carried on a container vessel," Maersk Line said.
The 16 vessels were ordered to meet the burgeoning demand fortransportation of goods between the east coast of South America andEurope and Asia. "We expect a continued strong growth in thesemarkets," said Michel Deleuran, Maersk Line's senior vice presidentand head of network and product. Maersk Line observed that tradebetween Asia and the Atlantic ports of South America has grown morethan 20% per year on average over the past five years, and thatrate, while slowing, is expected to remain in double digits overthe next five years.
Trade between South America and Europe is primarily driven byexport of perishable food products such as poultry, meat and fruit,transported in refrigerated containers. "Since 2002, the trade hasgrown 15% on a yearly average. This growth is expected to remainstrong with increased containerization opportunities in the comingyears," the shipping giant noted.
