Indian ginger could soon tickle the Japanese palate as exporterssee huge opportunities with China failing to meet the Japanesequality standards, Spices Board chairman VJ Kurian said.

Japan imports nearly one lakh tonne of ginger per annum and untilrecently, China was the major exporter, he said. Ginger- in- brineis an important element of Japanese cuisine.

With regular rejection due to the presence of pesticides andtoxins China has voluntarily stopped exports to Japan. Thailand ismeeting the demand but is unable to cater in large volumes, Kuriansaid.

India has the potential to export large volumes and could easilymeet the tough Japanese standards, with the organic ginger producedin the northeastern states, he added.

India produces 2.75 lakh tonne of ginger per annum, almost a thirdof the worlds production of 8.35 lakh tonne.
