DA prepares market for veggies

AS THE harvest of different kinds of vegetables is fastapproaching, the agri-business department has prepared the marketsfor this commodity.

In a consultation workshop on vegetable marketing conductedWednesday at the DA office, Agribusiness and Marketing AssistanceDivision (Amad) Chief Mirope Lamsen said the Department ofAgriculture (DA) is implementing different vegetable programs thatwill surely give a bountiful vegetable harvest.

These projects include the hunger mitigation program of PresidentGloria Arroyo, specifically in Davao Oriental, high valuecommercial crop enhancement in four provinces of Davao, and thebackyard vegetable project in the whole region.

"All these projects will surely provide our local markets with ahuge supply of vegetables this coming months," Lamsen said.

She said varieties of vegetables planted in the provinces includingampalaya, bottle gourd, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower,chayote, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, eggplant, ginger, kentuckybeans, lettuce, loofa, mungbeans, okra, pechay, potato, radish,spring onions, squash, stringbeans, sweet pepper, and tomato, amongothers.

She said Amad is now mapping out where the produce is coming from,the expected volume of production, and the number of farmers andcooperatives in preparation for the selling of vegetables in themarkets.

The City and Municipal High Value Commercial Crops Coordinators ofSouthern Mindanao attended the workshop.
